What it's like to work here

The Cheshire and Wirral team are responsible for the management of a portfolio of 17 sites across Cheshire with teams based in the East & West.

The West of the portfolio comprises 8 of these Countryside sites: Bickerton Hill, Bulkeley Hill, Burton Mill Wood and Helsby Hill within the county of Cheshire & Heswall Fields, Caldy Hill, Harrock Wood and Thurstaston Common situated on the Wirral peninsular within Merseyside.  

What you'll be doing

The properties are diverse in character, featuring rolling open countryside, dense canopy woodland, Lowland heath and farmland, coastal cliff and all tend to be popular for their  outstanding views. Bickerton Hill & Thurstaston Common are SSSI’s, notified for their heathland communities and both have extensive restoration programmes which forms a large part of the day to day role of the Rangers.   

There are two bases in the West, one at Thurstaston Common & the other at Bickerton Hill, with a Ranger based at each. This role will primarily be based at Bickerton, although the Rangers work together on a regular basis.  Experience of remote working, self-motivation and good time management are essential, you’ll also need to work with volunteer groups to deliver our work programmes, build local partnerships and have regular contact with neighbours and tenants with grazing livestock, along with visitors to the site.

  • Be able to deliver practical conservation work to protect and enhance the conservation status of the properties
  • Demonstrate a passion for nature, heritage and the outdoors
  • Be able to engage with visitors to ensure they understand the value of your work
  • Help create a great place to work, sharing common goals
  • Be enthusiastic with a willingness to learn
  • Be an excellent team player
  • Be able to work safely, with risk assessments and compliance with safety procedures
  • Have experience in land, access and conservation management
  • Have experience working in a similar outdoor setting
  • Be competent with machinery and equipment as well as having the relevant certificates
  •  Have experience of working with volunteers from different backgrounds and with varying abilities.
  •  Have competent IT skills, including knowledge of GIS mapping systems.
  • Be based at Bickerton Hill.

The following qualifications, certificates or evidence of training will be essential:

  • Diploma/NVQ3 or higher in countryside or environmental conservation
  • NPTC CS30,31 or equivalent
  • PA1, PA6 
  • Full Driving Licence
  • Lantra Sit astride ATV or equivalent
