Head of Land Stewardship

Head of Land Stewardship

Salary will be £60,508 to £65,068

The role can be located flexibly within Wales, with regular travel throughout Wales essential

The natural environment of Wales is exceptional and inspiring. It is the foundation for our health, well-being and prosperity. It provides the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat. It provides energy and raw materials. It is essential to our way of life – providing jobs, leisure and relaxation, and attractive places for us to live, work and enjoy. It is part of our culture, our history and our future. There are huge opportunities to improve everyone’s lives – but this can only happen if the natural environment is managed sustainably and recognised for the benefits it provides.

We are the largest Welsh Government Sponsored Body, with 1,750 talented and dedicated staff working across Wales. We advise the Welsh Government, industry, and the wider public and voluntary sectors on issues relating to the environment and its natural resources. Our work is varied, and it is important – we respond to 9,000 environmental incidents a year, manage 7 per cent of Wales’ land area, and protect people and the environment via our regulatory work covering the marine, forest and waste industries.

This is an exciting time for Natural Resources Wales, and we are now seeking a solutions-focused, inspiring leader with a track record developing strategic direction to join us as our new Head of Land Stewardship.  This senior leadership position will take the lead on strategy and environmental planning, setting the direction and having oversight across the land owned and managed by Natural Resources Wales to enable the economic, social and cultural benefits to flow for current and future generations.

An expert in land management with particular focus on forestry, you will be a creative thinker capable of working with and influencing multiple stakeholders at the highest levels.  Taking people with you on this journey will be critical and your leadership skills set you apart as you influence across the organisation and into the wider forestry sector.  You will be open to - and encourage others to embrace - new approaches in order to embed sustainable management of natural resources. It is critical, however, that we do so with the support of our partners and stakeholders, therefore an appreciation of the environment in which we operate will be crucial to delivering success. NRW undertakes its vital work in a complex and crowded stakeholder landscape, and building positive working relationships with Welsh and UK Governments, accreditation bodies and others responsible for land stewardship and management will be essential.
