We’re currently recruiting an Environment Specialist to join our team. You’ll develop and deliver Southern Co-op’s environmental programme as part of our wider Sustainability strategy and Our Plan 2019-2023, addressing the risks and maximising the opportunities this area presents for our business.

 KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

- Working with key stakeholders across the business, develop and implement an environmental strategy, policies and plans in line with Southern Co-op’s broader sustainability strategy, with a primary focus on energy management.
- Develop and implement an environmental management system to promote continuous improvement in environmental performance.
- Co-ordinate specific environmental projects and programmes including carbon and energy management, waste and resource use, monitoring and managing budgets directly controlled or influenced in line with expectations and timescales.
- Work with Southern Coop’s Risk Manager to ensure compliance with environmental legislation, ensuring the business is appropriately prepared for future legislation.
- Work with the Procurement Specialist to integrate sustainable procurement into all procurement policies and processes for goods not for resale and other direct sourcing areas.
- Work with other key areas of the business to drive forward strategic and tactical environmental projects (e.g. Property, Trading Formats, Operational teams etc).
- Responsible for the regular and timely planning, collation and reporting of environmental data internally and externally, including any reporting linked to legislative compliance (e.g. ESOS,SECR) or external indices the business decides to participate in.
- Manages colleague, member and wider stakeholder communication and engagement activities linked to our environment and broader sustainability strategy, championing best practice and putting in place the operational plans to ensure that relevant engagement activities, linked to areas of responsibility, are fully supported and delivered.
- Create a series of targets and KPI’s to effectively monitor progress against with our environment strategy and objectives, securing buy-in from the business and overseeing the timely and robust production of agreed performance reporting for both internal and external audiences.
- Provide in-house technical expertise on all matters to do with environmental sustainability researching external developments, proactively making proposals, and ensuring that Southern Co-op achieves and maintains class leading status in this area of its activities.
- Establish an external network of peers that will broaden understanding, identify opportunities to work with, or learn from, others. 
- Represent Southern Co-op at key events to raise the profile of Southern Co-op’s sustainability programme.
 
KEY EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

- A degree in an environmental topic or other relevant technical qualification/s preferable
- Experience in a similar role and in running environmental projects and embedding environmental management principles
- Sound understanding of environmental and broader sustainability issues
- Good communicator with strong presentational and interpersonal skills / a proficient advocate
- Strong organisational skills
- Collegiate and diplomatic in approach to working with teams at all levels
- Good project and data management skills
- Ability to work under own initiative and without direct assistance
- Experience of stakeholder engagement, managing and driving change
- Full UK driving licence
