Hours: 35 hours per week, Monday - Friday

Salary: £30,346 pa + 3% pension

Contract: Permanent

Annual leave: 25 days per year, increasing by 1 day per year until you reach 30

Location: Share Garden, Springfield Hospital, Glenburnie Road, London, SW17 7DJ

Reporting to:  Head of Training, with regular input from Head of Finance and Operations

About us

At Share, we’re passionate about supporting disabled people to set their own goals for learning and life, and helping them to achieve their aspirations.  The majority of our students are people with learning disabilities and/or autism. We also work with people with long term mental health needs or physical disabilities. We offer a range of training, employment, personal development, and leisure opportunities, and our horticulture programme, set within a beautiful walled garden in Tooting, has been a popular project for over 20 years. Our horticulture training is fully accredited, and leads to nationally recognised qualifications. We’re an Investor in People, and we hold the National Autistic Society’s Autism Accreditation quality mark.
As well as being a training project, we’re a social business, operating Share Nurseries, which sells plants and craft items and is set to grow over the next few years. 

The role

Growing Share Nurseries will provide real work opportunities and experience to our students, which may either help them move in to paid or voluntary work, or at the very least contribute towards them making progress on their Outcome Star through increasing their self esteem, confidence and sense of accomplishment. In order to do this, we need a first rate Manager who has significant experience in project and people management, preferably in horticulture. This could be through business or social enterprise. You may have managed a gardening business, a garden centre, or you may be a passionate gardener who has diverse business and management experience. You’ll need to be able to shape and drive the business, whilst being sensitive to the needs and abilities of the workforce i.e. our students with learning disabilities and autism who are working towards horticulture qualifications.

Main Responsibilities

• To lead the development of Share’s Horticulture project, managing and guiding the Senior Trainer and Assessor, overseeing the management of volunteers and other Horticulture staff as required
• To develop Share’s social business – Share Nurseries – so that it becomes the focus for work experience for our students, delivers excellent produce to environmentally sustainable standards, and serves to link Share with the wider community. • To be responsible for maintaining a beautiful and welcoming garden to our students, customers and visitors.
• To develop a strong work ethic within the garden project, so that every student has a work-related role and everyone is involved in at least one project area. This will involve being hands on with the delivery of our services.
• To develop operational plans for our training and enterprise programmes and to ensure that targets are met within agreed timeframes, with input from the Head of Training
• To proactively ensure that equipment and facilities are maintained and to plan for new equipment and/or repairs when they’re needed.
• To manage the financial aspects of Share Nurseries, including cash and card payments, budget monitoring, and financial reporting.
• To manage the stock within Share Nurseries and to ensure that everything sold meets industry standards.
• To foster strong relationships with local environmental groups, including Transition Town Tooting and local allotment societies, and to be the face of Share Nurseries.
• To liaise closely with the SW London and St George’s Mental Health Trust and the developers who are currently creating a new village on the hospital site, so as to ensure that Share’s best interests are protected, and from 2020, to coordinate the move of Share Gardening to a neighbouring site on the campus. 
• To ensure adherence to all policies within Share with respect to students and junior staff on the project. To be responsible for the overall Health, Safety and Welfare at work on the site.
• To work closely with the Communications Manager to help organise Share events at the garden such as garden parties, corporate events and open days.
• To support the development of funding bids and tenders as required.
• To work as part of a team.  This includes working closely with the Wellbeing Manager, Head of Training, and Senior Management Team.
• To attend and participate in regular staff meetings and any other meetings as required by the organisation.  
• To undertake any other tasks that may be reasonably required by the organisation.

Person Specification

Essential Experience

1. Experience of working within a horticulture setting in a senior role.
2. Experience of developing and managing projects and people.
3. Experience of managing a budget of up to £100k.
4. Business experience that encompasses sales, stock management, maintenance of health and safety and relevant industrial standards, and customer service. This can be within the commercial or not for profit sectors.
5. Experience of taking initiative and leading projects that involve change.
6. Experience of working with people who face diverse challenges.

Essential skills

1. Excellent leadership and coaching skills including the proven ability to lead by example, demonstrating commitment, passion, empathy, honesty and integrity in everything you do. 
2. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to relate positively and in a non-discriminatory way to people from a range of backgrounds and communities. This includes the proven ability to explain tasks and procedures clearly and simply, with the ability to motivate and empathise with disabled people and those facing long term health problems. 
3. The ability to drive, and possession of a clean driving licence.
4. Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage and develop our horticultural project so that it’s an attractive business and also a safe and positive environment in which our students flourish.
5. Excellent project management skills, including the ability to develop sales lines, promote sales and market our produce.
6. Strong planning skills, with the ability to plan year-round activities and see them through to completion. Planning skills will also be needed when co-ordinating a move to the new site in around 2020.
7. To be a proficient user of the Microsoft Office Suite (2010) of programs including: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher and the internet.
8. Good written English and numeracy skills, with the proven ability to write reports.
9. Excellent administrative skills, including the proven ability to manage day to day administration and keep the paperwork up to date.
10. The ability to use initiative to develop contacts and networks to increase the scope of work opportunities for the project.
11. A willingness to learn about safeguarding of vulnerable adults and children and to ensure that your project meets the highest standards.
12. The proven ability to lead and work as part of a small team.

Essential Knowledge

1. Knowledge of the horticulture industry and good plant knowledge.
2. Knowledge of health and safety legislation, best practice and relevant industry standards.

1. A strong commitment to the inclusion of disabled people in all aspects of life, including employment, and confidence in working with people from a wide range of ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
2. Empathy, emotional intelligence, and the ability to motivate people who may need considerable encouragement and support in order to engage in work-based activities.
3. Personal flexibility and the ability to work in a way that is adaptable and focused on the needs of each individual student and the staff member for whom you’re responsible.
4. A natural innovate and creative in approach, ensuring your team is empowered to contribute to the long term vision for the project.
5. Enthusiasm to develop your own personal and professional skills in relation to growing our social enterprise and working with disabled people.
6. The ability to solve problems creatively and manage stressful situations.

Desirable Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Knowledge:

1. A qualification in a business related subject and/or a management qualification.
2. A horticultural qualification.
3. Knowledge of safeguarding.
4. Knowledge about autism and different aspects of learning disability, including the barriers people face seeking employment.
5. Knowledge of current government initiatives to move disabled people into employment and the help that’s available to disabled people in employment.
6. Knowledge of current developments in Horticulture.
